Trinidad celebrates first woman PM

A 59-year-old lawyer was elected as the first female prime minister in Trinidad and Tobago today.

Preliminary elections results in the twin-island Caribbean nation indicated Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her five-party People’s Partnership coalition won 29 of 41 seats in parliament.

She told thousands of supporters at a celebration that her government will not leave anyone behind.

Incumbent Prime Minister Patrick Manning conceded defeat late yesterday. He said he would be evaluating his own career after 40 years in politics.
