A boy who was pulled from the River Thames by rescuers two hours after falling into the water has died in hospital, Scotland Yard said tonight.

Officers were called to Rainbow Quay SE16, near Surrey Quays, in east London at around midday following reports that a child had fallen into the water.

The 12-year-old, from Deptford, south-east London, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being recovered from the water at around 2pm, but was later pronounced dead.

Officers from Southwark police station will investigate the circumstances of the boy’s death, though it is not currently being treated as suspicious, police said.
