Strong earthquake hits Eastern Indonesia island

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck Indonesia’s North Maluku province.

There have been no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred near Obi island at a depth of about 33 miles.

The area is some 1,500 miles east of Jakarta.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Geophysics and Climate Agency measured the quake at 6.4 magnitude.

Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone.

A quake last year killed more than 1,000 people on Sumatra.

Another off Indonesia’s coast caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000.
