Labour not storming to 'great victory', says Prescott

John Prescott acknowledged today that Labour was not storming ahead to a “great victory” in the UK's General Election.

But the former deputy Prime Minister insisted it was still a two-horse race between Labour and the Tories.

And he rejected suggestions that Labour should cosy up to the Liberal Democrats to hold on to power.

“I don’t believe in that kind of government,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“I’ve been in governments with majorities of one and four and we’ve still kept going.

“We’ve got to persuade people to come back to Labour. We do it on leadership and delivery. On both those things we have an excellent record.

“If you keep on yakking about whether you are going to work with any other parties, don’t be surprised if the public think that’s the issue.

“Let’s wait for the day when the votes come.”

With Labour trailing in the polls, presenter John Humphrys suggested: “You aren’t telling me you think Labour are storming ahead to a great victory?”

Mr Prescott replied: “No they’re not. But you’ve got to fight for it and put your case.”
