Traffic-calming granny takes on China's tailbacks

A 71-year-old grandmother has become a local celebrity in China for her valiant efforts to control traffic at a busy pedestrian crossing.

Passers-by say "Granny Cai" looks like a dancer as she jumps between lanes of traffic on the hectic road in Fuzhou.

Cai grabs hold of pedestrians who try to cross when the lights are at red, and jumps in front of vehicles who try to cross at the wrong time.

She told the China News Network: "I am nearing the end of my life and I wanted to do something useful for other people before I go."
