French car maker Peugeot was on the verge of issuing a recall today as some of its vehicles are made on the same production line as Toyota, a spokesman said.

The Japanese manufacturer halted sales in the US last week because of faulty accelerator pedals which could stick without warning.

It recalled up to 1.8 million cars in Europe because of the same problem, including thousands in the UK.

The Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 are made alongside the Toyota Aygo at a plant in the Czech Republic, a spokesman for the French company said.

He explained that the firm is waiting for information from Toyota to ascertain how many cars may be affected.

Toyota said that the problem is rare, and that it is already using different parts on production lines in Europe.
