Karzai wins Afghan election by default

President Hamid Karzai was declared winner of Afghanistan’s troubled election today after a run-off vote planned against his main rival was cancelled.

Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah dropped out of the race yesterday because he said the vote would not be free or fair.
