Turkey and Armenia 'agree diplomatic ties'

Turkey and Armenia have agreed to establish diplomatic ties, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said tonight.

Ministry spokesman Burak Ozugergin says the neighbouring countries agreed to start discussions leading to agreements for setting up and developing relations for the first time, a Ministry spokesman said.

The negotiations should last for six weeks, the spokesman added.

He said Turkey and Armenia had reached agreement on setting up ties through mediation by Switzerland.
