Malaysian model given caning reprieve

Islamic officials unexpectedly freed a Muslim model today, who was due to be caned for drinking beer.

Two female officials and a man came to Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno’s house in northern Malaysia earlier today and took her away in a van on what was supposed to be a four-hour road journey to a prison near Kuala Lumpur, the country’s main city.
