Suu Kyi found guilty by Burma court
Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was found guilty by a court today of violating her house arrest.
However, the head of the military-ruled country said she can serve an 18-month sentence under house arrest.
The court sentenced Ms Suu Kyi to a three-year prison term.
After a five-minute recess, the country’s home minister entered the courtroom and read aloud a special order by junta chief Than Shwe.
The order said he was cutting the sentence in half and that it could be served under house arrest.
Ms Suu Kyi has been in detention for 14 of the last 20 years, mostly under house arrest.
