Caveman fugitive returned to justice

An escaped murderer has finally been caught after 16 years living in caves in northern Portugal.

Police launched Operation Cro-magnon in an attempt to snare the 54-year-old man who “looked like Robinson Crusoe”, with a deep tan and a long beard.

A spokesman said the man lived in several caves in hilly forests near his home village, where he had been a shepherd.

Local friends and family are believed to have provided him with food.

The man, whose name was not made public, was caught yesterday and returned to prison to serve the remaining seven years of his 10-year sentence.
