An airliner carrying 135 passengers and eight crew crashed on landing at Amsterdam airport today.

A Turkish Airlines official said one person was killed and around 20 others injured in the crash.

The Turkish Airlines Boeing 737, flying to Schiphol airport from Istanbul, broke into several pieces on impact, according to reports from the scene.

Witnesses said some passengers did escape uninjured.

An airport spokeswoman said the jet crashed as it approached the runway to land and that all flights to and from Schiphol had been suspended.

The wreckage was lying in a field next to the runway and that emergency services were treating passengers in the field, local media said.
