Russian mine blast kills 12

An explosion and fire ripped through a mine in northern Russia, killing 12 workers, an emergency official said today.

The blast occurred while workers were tunnelling at a mine that belongs to OAO Apatit, a company that produces the fertiliser component apatite, or calcium phosphate, Murmansk region Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Gretskaya said.
