At least five scrap collectors have been killed in northern India after an army shell exploded as they tried to salvage metal from it.

Senior police official A.P. Phardwaj said the explosion today also injured eight others. The blast happened in a slum in Meerut, about 45 miles northeast of New Delhi.

Phardwaj says the scrap workers found the shell at a nearby army camp and took it home to dismantle it for the metal. He says the shell apparently exploded after they hit it repeatedly.
