Giant particle accelerator to be switched on today

Scientists will "switch on" the most powerful particle accelerator ever built today in an attempt to answer some of the biggest unanswered questions in physics.

The €6.2bn Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will smash protons - one of the building blocks of matter - into each other at energies up to seven times greater than any achieved before.
