Search for missing victims continues after Indian monsoon

Rescuers started searching for missing flood victims today after more than one million people were evacuated in flood-devastated northern India.

Prataya Amrit, a state disaster management official said rescuers were now moving into previously inaccessible areas.

The rescue operation began after no rain fell in the region for five days and a drop in the flow of the Kosi River into impoverished Bihar state from neighbouring Nepal.

He said more than 257,000 people have taken shelter in 313 state-run camps in Bihar state, where the Kosi River turned hundreds of square miles of land into a giant lake after bursting its banks last month.

He said the main focus was now on the smooth functioning of relief camps and looking for the missing people.
