India government survives vote of confidence

India's government has survived a confidence vote, clearing the way for the revival of a landmark nuclear energy deal with the US that is at the centre of an emerging partnership between the two countries.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh and his Congress party fought hard to secure their victory, and appeared to cut backroom deals when all else failed.
