Nato soldier killed in Afghanistan blast

A Nato soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in insurgency-wracked southern Afghanistan today, officials said.

The attack was on a Nato convoy in Kandahar’s Panjwayi district, the Nato press office in Kabul said.

Nato did not release the dead soldier’s nationality or say how many were wounded.

Most of the troops in the area are Canadian.

A separate blast struck a police patrol in Kandahar’s Maywand district, killing four police officers and wounding another, said Khan Mohammad, a police official.

Separately, a suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint near the main Nato base just outside Kandahar city, wounding a child and a policeman, said Mohammad Nabi Khan, another police official.

Southern Afghanistan is the centre of the country’s Taliban-led insurgency. More than 2,500 people – mostly militants – have died in insurgency-related violence this year in Afghanistan.
