Young surfer in shark attack in Brazil

A teenager was seriously injured when he was attacked by a shark while surfing off the coast of north-eastern Brazil.

Fire department spokesman Wilton Miranda said 14-year-old Juan Rodrigues Galvao de Franca was attacked while surfing off the Del Cifre beach, which is off-limits to bathers and surfers because of the danger of shark attacks.

The youngster suffered a deep gash in his left leg but managed to break loose from the shark’s jaws and swim ashore, where he was rescued by an emergency ambulance crew that was passing by.
