Residents evacuated after gas suicide in Japan

Japanese police say they evacuated 34 people from an apartment building where a man apparently committed suicide by mixing chemicals and inhaling the fumes.

Police were called to the scene in Kanazawa City, in western Japan, early today after a resident found a sign on the door of an apartment warning of dangerous gas emissions.

After noticing a strange smell coming from the apartment, the 34 residents were moved to a local community centre.

The man’s death was the latest in a string of suicides committed by mixing household chemicals.
