Woman killed in London bus crash

A woman died today and nine people were injured when a bus crashed in to a tree in London, police said.

London Ambulance Service said 18 people were treated at the scene. Of these, four had serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

Five with minor injuries were taken to hospital. The ambulance service said it sent six ambulances to the scene and a fast response car.

The accident happened on Tower Bridge Road in central London at 9.23am.

Police, ambulance and fire service were at the scene, Scotland Yard said.

The 188 double decker was travelling from North Greenwich station in south east London to Russell Square in central London.

The accident happened at the junction with Tanner Street. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not know whether she was a passenger on the bus.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We are currently trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

“A woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a further nine people have been injured and have been taken to central London hospitals. Officers are speaking to the driver of the bus.”

Road closures are in place in the area.

Travel London operates more than 30 bus routes in the London area. The 188 would have travelled through Deptford and Canada Water and would have gone on to Russell Square via Holborn station.

The 188’s depot is at Walworth in south London.
