Zimbabwe opposition headquarters raided by police

Police raided the offices of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, a senior police official said today.

Several people were arrested in the raids accused of being responsible for post-election violence.

Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said he could not say how many people were rounded up in the raid.

He said they are suspected “in connection with some crimes that were committed in the countryside.”

The opposition has said people were seeking refuge at its Harare headquarters after being attacked by ruling party loyalists.

The opposition and independent religious and human rights groups have accused President Robert Mugabe’s regime of a violent crackdown on dissent since the March 29 elections.
