Excavations for Thessaloniki’s metro line have revealed more than 1,000 graves, some filled with jewellery, coins and art, the Archaeological service in Greece said today.

Excavations for Thessaloniki’s metro line have revealed more than 1,000 graves, some filled with jewellery, coins and art, the Archaeological service in Greece said today.

The great majority of the graves, 886, were found just east of the centre of Greece’s second largest city, at the site of a cemetery during Roman and Byzantine times.
