Germany recognises independent Kosovo

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government has approved recognition of Kosovo as an independent state, a German official said today.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said the Cabinet backed recognition, a final step before the country’s president sends a letter to Kosovo opening diplomatic ties.

Germany’s decision to extend recognition followed similar action by other countries, including the United States.
