Low-cost airline Ryanair was ordered by a French court today to pay 60,001 euros (£45,109) to President Nicolas Sarkozy and his new wife, Carla Bruni, over an advertisement featuring a photo of the couple.

Mr Sarkozy and Ms Bruni filed separate lawsuits, which were heard together in a court session in Paris, seeking damages for the Irish carrier’s use of the image for commercial purposes without permission.
