America sought to temper premature hopes of a Middle East peace breakthrough tonight in the wake of President George Bush’s visit to Israel.

As he arrived in Kuwait seeking Arab backing for the initiative, his Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said it was unrealistic to expect Arab leaders to suddenly reach out to Israel, their historic enemy.
