Thousands evacuated from Mexico's tallest building

More than 10,000 people were evacuated from Latin America’s tallest building after police found a handmade bomb, Mexican authorities said.

A bomb squad found the device inside a car left in the building’s car park.

It consisted of three metal tubes filled with gunpowder and tied together with tape, Mexico City’s Public Security Department said in a news release.

A mobile phone was attached to it, it said.

An unidentified person called one of the offices of the 225-metre Torre Mayor, located on Mexico City’s main Reforma avenue, to warn that a bomb had been placed inside a car on one of the building’s 13 parking levels.

The car was reported stolen, authorities said.

The government news agency Notimex reported that the car was stolen on August 14 in the eastern Iztapalapa borough.

A total of 10,800 people were evacuated from the 55-floor building, inaugurated in 2003.
