Suicide attack near Afghan airport

A suicide attacker detonated his vehicle close to the airport in the Afghanistan capital Kabul today, killing at least one solider and wounding two others, officials and witnesses said.

The blast occurred at the entrance to the military section of the airport, which is mostly guarded by Afghan soldiers, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.

“A car drove fast and blew up next to crowd a people, including Afghan National Army soldiers,” said Mansur, a witness who only gave a single name. “A lot of people were left laying on the ground. ”

Defence minister spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi said at least one Afghan solider was killed and two others were wounded in the attack, the latest in a wave of insurgent-led violence in the country.

Ali Shah Paktaiwal, chief of criminal investigations, confirmed it was a suicide blast.

“We fear people have been killed,” he said.
