Free BBC reporter, Abbas urges militants
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today demanded the unconditional release of BBC journalist Alan Johnston.
Johnston was seized outside his Gaza City apartment on March 12, and has become the longest-held foreigner in Gaza.
Palestinian officials have said they know where to find Johnston, but have held back on raiding the hideout at Britain’s request for fear of causing harm to the hostage.
The Palestinian government has instead tried to negotiate the captors.
In a meeting with local dignitaries in Gaza City, Abbas said today: “It is necessary to release him without conditions, so he (Johnston) can return safely to his parents.”
Abbas has repeatedly called for Johnston’s release, but appears to hold little sway over the militants holding the journalist.
