Cyprus and Malta cleared the first major hurdle to joining the euro currency zone today when the European Commission and the European Central Bank backed their membership applications.

Cyprus and Malta cleared the first major hurdle to joining the euro currency zone today when the European Commission and the European Central Bank backed their membership applications.

They would become the 14th and 15th nations to use the currency next January if EU leaders and EU finance ministers approve them to adopt the euro in the next two months.
