African Union Parliament to debate Zimbabwe crisis

The Pan African Parliament is to debate the worsening crisis in Zimbabwe after a motion was tabled calling for an investigation into the arrest and detention of opposition activists in the southern African country.

The motion, tabled on Tuesday by South African politician Suzanne Vos, calls for a fact-finding mission to be sent to Zimbabwe.

It will be debated on Friday by the largely symbolic body of the African Union which is currently in session.

“As members of the Pan African Parliament we have a responsibility, an obligation to help resolve the situation in Zimbabwe.

“We are dealing with issues such as Darfur, Somalia, the situation in the Great Lakes. We could not in all conscience omit Zimbabwe,” Vos said.
