A former Nasa flight surgeon said today the woman astronaut accused of trying to kidnap and murder a love rival had suffered “mental anguish”.

The comments by Dr Jon Clark, whose wife, astronaut Laurel Clark, was killed in the 2003 Columbia shuttle disaster, came as Lisa Nowak was returned from Florida to Houston, Texas, for a medical assessment.
