Two killed in helicopter crash in Iraq

A US military helicopter crashed during combat operations near Najaf today, killing two crew members, the US military said.

A US statement said the incident occurred while the helicopter was “conducting operations to assist Iraqi Security Forces” and that the remains of the crew members were recovered.

The statement gave no further details and did not identify the type of helicopter.

Iraqi authorities said the helicopter crashed while providing close air support to Iraqi troops battling militants who planned to carry out attacks against Shiite pilgrims and clerics during the upcoming Ashoura commemorations.

Iraqi authorities said about 250 militants were killed in the battle about 12 milesnortheast of Najaf.
