Castro 'recovering well' - son

The older son of Cuban president Fidel Castro said his father was recovering and in good spirits.

“He is recovering, I see him recovering,” Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 54, told reporters briefly in Valdivia, south of Santiago, Chile, at the opening of a centre for science studies, yesterday.

“He is in good spirits and optimistic.”

When he arrived in Santiago on Friday, Diaz-Balart had refused to comment on his ailing father’s condition.

Diaz-Balart, a nuclear scientist, has refused to talk further to reporters.

His father has not appeared in public since undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in July.
