Ten people were killed when a speeding passenger bus crashed into two cars travelling in the opposite direction in north-western Sri Lanka today, police said.

The bus was heading to the capital, Colombo, when it crashed into the two cars packed with about 20 people returning from a funeral, in Gokarella village, about 175 miles north-east of Colombo, police officer Jayatilakaratne Bulanawewa said.

The remaining passengers in the car were injured and have been admitted to hospital, he said.
