The Democratic victory in the US elections was seen in Asia as a well-deserved rejection of the war in Iraq, but was not expected to have a major impact on American foreign policy.

Few feared the split in government between the two political parties would paralyse the government, but the returns were seen by some as the beginning of the end of President George Bush’s term in office.
