Shots fired in Pope protest

Security guards today detained a man who fired shots into the air outside the Italian consul general's residence in the Turkish city of Istanbul to protest at the forthcoming visit by Pope Benedict XVI, a news agency reported.

The Dogan news agency said the protester had tossed his gun into the garden of the residence after allegedly firing the shots.
