Sri Lanka’s air force today pounded Tamil Tiger rebel positions in the country’s north, military officials said.

“We took three airstrikes this morning to destroy their (Tamil rebels) mortar positions,” said military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe.

He said insurgents were firing mortars toward government troops in the northern Jaffna peninsula and that airstrikes were required to neutralise those attacks.

The damage was not immediately known.

There was no immediate comment from the rebels.
