EU funds Congo elections
The European Union today announced it granted an extra £11m (€16.3) to help fill gaps in funding for the elections in Congo.
Following a first-round presidential vote in July, President Joseph Kabila will face his nearest rival, former rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba, in an October 29 runoff.
Armed supporters of the two men clashed in Kinshasa after the publication of the first round results.
In announcing the new aid, the EU appealed for both sides to avoid further violence.
“By their massive turnout and exemplary behaviour, the electors of Congo gave their leaders and politicians an important lesson in democracy and civic responsibility,” EU development commissioner Louis Michel said in a statement.
“I urge both candidates to accept the verdict of the ballot-box and abide by the election results unconditionally.”
