Explosion kills policeman in Chechnya

One police officer was killed in an explosion in Chechnya, officials said today, while a fatal shooting in a nearby province in southern Russia sparked fears of renewed ethnic strife.

A self-made explosive device blew up in Chechnya’s southern Vedeno district yesterday, killing one policeman and seriously injuring another, the republic’s Interior Ministry said.
