Afghan forces have killed 19 Taliban rebels as they traded rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire with insurgents in volatile southern Afghanistan.

The fighting yesterday in the southern province of Helmand took place 15km south of Lashkar Gah, as police hunted Taliban militants, said Mullah Amir Mohammed Akhundza, the provincial deputy governor who led the operation.
