EU welcomes Montenegro referendum result

The European Union today welcomed the smooth conduct of Montenegro’s independence referendum, adding it would respect the result of the vote.

“We will fully respect the result of the referendum,” said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Brussels.

He called on those for and against independence to respect the victory of the pro-independence bloc in yesterday’s vote to secede from Serbia and form a separate state.
