The Vatican today said the ordainment of bishops by China’s state-approved Catholic church were a “grave violation of religious freedom” and hindered dialogue between the Vatican and Beijing.

A statement by Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said Pope Benedict XVI was deeply saddened at the news of the ordainments.

They took place on Sunday and Wednesday without Vatican approval.
