Workers feared trapped in scaffolding collapse

Several workers were feared trapped today after 15 floors of scaffolding collapsed “like a pack of cards” at a hotel building site in the UK.

Emergency services rushed to the site of the half-constructed Jurys Inn Hotel in Milton Keynes after the incident at around 12.30pm.

A Fire Brigade spokesman said there had been a number of casualties, but they were not sure how many.

There were reportedly up to 200 workmen at the site at Witan Gate East.

“There have been three or four people trapped in the pile of material that has fallen.

“There is only superficial damage to the building itself.”

He added that about 15 ambulances were at the scene.

Nick Reynolds, a receptionist working in a nearby BP office, saw the collapse.

He said: “There was a lot of scaffolding where they are building the new Jury’s Inn.

“It came down like a pack of cards.”

The website for the Jurys Inn says it will be a 3-star property with 279 bedrooms, close to Milton Keynes’ train station.

It is due to open on June 23.
