Italy heading towards a split parliament

Italy’s parliament today appeared to be heading for an unprecedented split between the conservative coalition led by Premier Silvio Berlusconi and one led by his centre-left challenger.

Such an election result could stall the formation of a new government and lead to a new period of political instability.
