A man has been arrested after leaving his five-month-old baby alone in a car while he and his wife visited a nightclub, Cypriot police said today.

Police found the baby girl at 3am this morning near a nightclub in Limassol, 50 miles south of capital Nicosia, a police statement said.

The 42-year-old Cypriot father showed up 30 minutes later, police said, followed by his wife.

The woman, a 38-year-old foreign national, acknowledged they were at the nightclub but said they had taken turns checking on the baby, police said. The statement did not specify her nationality.

Both parents were arrested for allegedly exposing the baby to danger, while the father was also charged with allegedly assaulting the police officers who arrested him, the statement said.

The mother was released from custody today, police said, and reunited with her daughter. Welfare authorities have been notified about the incident, police said.
