Indian police detain eight Greenpeace activists

Police in New Delhi today briefly detained eight Greenpeace activists for carrying a truckload of bags stuffed with rubbish to the French embassy as part of its campaign to stop a decommissioned French warship from entering an Indian shipbreaking yard unless it is cleared of toxic waste.

Stamped with the message: “France, Your Waste Kills”, the white bags also contained a petition, signed by more than 1,000 Indian nationals, asking French authorities to recall the Clemenceau, which is expected to reach the Alang shipbreaking yard in western India in early March.
