The European Union today called for closer international co-operation to fight the bird flu virus, and will pledge €80m at this week’s international conference in Beijing to improve prevention efforts.

“Better co-ordination at the global level is necessary to tackle the spread of avian flu and any possible outbreak of a human influenza pandemic,” EU Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said before leaving for the international bird flu conference.
