Kennedy sparks resignation speculation

The British Liberal Democrats party leader Charles Kennedy sparked speculation that he is about to quit as Liberal Democrat leader today by announcing a surprise public statement.

Mr Kennedy’s spokeswoman would give no details of what he will say in his statement at the party’s Westminster HQ at 3pm.

However, senior MPs have threatened to quit the frontbench if he does not resign by Monday.

Earlier today his spokeswoman said he had no plans for any public appearances.

Mr Kennedy's statement comes amid signs that he has lost the support of Lib Dem activists as well as MPs.

Mr Kennedy challenged opponents to fight him in a leadership contest when he was forced to finally admit a long-term drink problem earlier this week.
