Bush defiant over eavesdropping claims

US president George Bush has personally approved a secretive eavesdropping programme more than three dozen times since October 2001, a senior intelligence official has said.

The disclosure follows angry demands by politicians yesterday for congressional inquiries into whether the monitoring by the highly-secretive National Security Agency breached civil liberties.
